Staten Island, NY—Ten spectators suffered injuries during a Memorial Day airshow at Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island, New York. Although the military aircraft itself did not sustain any damage, as there was no crash involved in the incident, the plane’s twin propellers caused a windblast that injured 10 people. The injurious airshow incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. Monday, May 31, 2010, Lauren Schulz of the U.S. Marines reported. Military flight exhibitions included those from the Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines as part of New York City’s annual Fleet Week Exhibition, according to information provided by CNN.

Bystanders intently watched as the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft conducted an intricate display of it’s advanced military flight capabilities. However, as the plane came in for a landing, something went wrong. The aircraft’s twin propellers produced a great amount of power, consequently forcing the branches from a tree onto several members of the audience. The tree was positioned approximately 600 feet away from the aircraft.

Emergency medical services (EMS) and fire personnel were already on the scene, which remains a habitual precautionary measure during all public military demonstrations. The forceful wind gust left 10 viewers with injuries. A total of seven were transported to area hospitals, while three others received medical attention at the scene. Schulz noted all injuries were deemed to be minor.

According to the Civilian Air Show Accident Analysis, provided by Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, there were 55 air show and practice accidents between 1997 and 2007. Thirty-nine of those accidents were fatal, causing a total of 48 casualties. These statistics seemingly represent pilot and aircraft occupant fatalities. However, though deadly airshow incidents tend to be infrequent, spectators also run the risk of suffering injuries or even death during the displays.
