New York, NY (New York City Accident Lawyer News)—One person was killed and six others were injured after the impact of a two-vehicle collision sent a livery cab onto a sidewalk and through a glass bus shelter occupied by several pedestrians Tuesday, August 10, 2010. The horrific chain-reaction accident, which pinned an elderly man against a wall and severed the legs of two other victims, happened on Kingsbridge Road near University Avenue in the Bronx. The 11:50 a.m. traffic crash occurred after a van made an illegal U-turn and collided with the livery cab, according to information provided by the New York Daily News.

Reports indicated 57-year-old Randolph Belle was driving a van eastbound along Kingsbridge Rd. when he turned sharply in an attempt to make an illegal U-turn. Pedro Marte, 57, was traveling behind the van in a Lincoln Town Car, which served as a livery cab. Though Marte attempted to steer away from the turning van, he was unable to do so in time. Upon clipping the van, the taxi careened onto the sidewalk, crashed into the Bronx bus shelter, striking several pedestrians inside. According to 45-year-old witness Luis Alvarez, “There was so much blood, so much… It was really terrible.”

Authorities from the New York City Fire Department reported seven people, four of whom suffered critical injuries, were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital after the horrific chain-reaction wreck. Marcelino Adraneda, 76, suffered traumatic injuries when the out-of-control cab pinned him to a wall. Adraneda sadly succumbed to those injuries. Head of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers Fernando Mateo noted that though Marte noticed people waiting in the bus shelter, he was unable to stop or control his vehicle at that point. “He said, ‘Oh, my God!’ and when he saw the bodies he had a nervous breakdown… It was out of his hands, it was out of his control. He’s very sorry for all the pain these people felt.” Though Belle was cited for making an illegal U-turn, both drivers passed Breathalyzer tests and no criminal charges were filed against either of them.
