Bronx, NY—While preliminary investigations into a double fatal Bronx crash indicated “driver inattentiveness” may have been a key factor, one surviving victim contends the driver may have been “slightly intoxicated” at the time. The deadly automobile accident occurred along the Bronx River Parkway early Sunday, May 16, 2010. As a result of the wreck, two off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officers were tragically killed. Four additional passengers suffered serious injuries in the single-vehicle crash as well. The four injured women were transported to Jacobi Medical Center to be treated for fractures, amongst other accident-induced wounds, according to information provided by the New York Daily News.

Reports stated two NYPD officers of the 32nd Precinct in Harlem, identified as 32-year-old Hoyoung Kim and 25-year-old Edwin Paulino, attended a surprise party for a fellow officer prior to the accident. Although Officer Kim vowed to remain sober and was dubbed the designated driver for the night, a full investigation would be required to determine if he kept such an oath. Before leaving the celebration in Pelham Bay, the officers reportedly offered to drive four women home. The four individuals were identified as Melina Ramirez, 27; Shirley Torres, 26; Jazmin Ramirez, 23, and Iris Gomez-Ramirez, 27.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., Officer Kim was driving his Nissan Altima along the Bronx River Parkway when it struck a guardrail. On impact, the vehicle rolled over and struck a pole. Both officers succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene. The four female passengers who were occupying the vehicle at the time sustained severe injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported them to the hospital to be treated for multiple fractures. According to the Ramirez family, Melina and Iris may be permanently unable to walk.

According to a sergeant at the 32nd Precinct, “Officer Kim was an officer and a gentleman. He was direct and professional. It seems unlikely he would get behind the wheel drunk. That’s the last thing he would do.” Toxicology tests are reportedly pending and use of a controlled substance has not been ruled out as a potential contributing factor. However, according to a source within the investigation, the crash seemed to have occurred after Officer Kim was momentarily distracted. Seemingly, when he regained focus, “he realized he was about to pass his exit”, subsequently prompting the motor vehicle wreck. A full probe is expected to be underway.
